Baseball Terminology


BA – Batting Average: The ratio of hits per number of at bats a player has. For example, if a player got one hit out of four at bats. Then their BA would be 0.250

SO – Strike Out: When a pitcher throws three strikes a batter strikes out.

Strike: When a pitcher throws a pitch that lands within the strike zone, or the batter swings ad misses at a pitch. A foul ball counts as a strike as well however a foul ball will not count as a third strike.

BB – Walk: Whenever a pitcher walks a batter it means that they threw 4 balls during the at bat so the batter gets to go to first base.

H – Hit: When a batter successfully reaches first base after hitting a pitch.

ER – Earned Run: When a run scores as a result of the pitcher it is an Earned run charged against the pitcher. For example this could be because of a home run, a hit or a walk.

RBI – Run Batted In:

HR – Home Run: When a batter hits the ball outside of the ballpark in fair territory(Between the foul pole in left field and right field)

Single: when a batter reaches first base as a result of their hit.

Double: When a batter reaches second base as a result of their hit.

Triple: When a batter reaches third base as a result of their hit.
